The Psychology of the Leaderboard

The Psychology of the Leaderboard

In 1954, Roger Bannister did the unthinkable and broke the 4-minute mile barrier by running it in 3 minutes and 59 seconds. The bigger story, which is rarely discussed, is what happened before and after this milestone.

A  year before Bannister’s accomplishment,  John Landy of Australia ran the mile in 4 minutes and 2 seconds. He was close, and Bannister knew it.

Instead of shrinking away at the rise of Landy, Bannister used it as fuel to refine his technique eventually leading to his breakthrough on May 6th, 1954.

What happened next was astounding.

Landy then broke Bannister’s record a month and a half later.  Then, at least two more athletes broke the barrier the following year.

What changed?

For over a century, the 4-minute mile was considered impossible.   Once the record was broken, other athletes reset their belief about what was possible.   Today, HUNDREDS, if not thousands of athletes, have run the mile in under 4 minutes, including a 17-year-old Jim Ryun in 2021.   It’s all because of the leaderboard.

People do
what people see!

We become what we’re around

That’s the psychology of the leaderboard.

Some experienced agents and team members show up believing they are already at or near capacity for their production.  Only to find that we haven’t scratched the scratch of the surface of what’s available. They would never know had it not been for the leaderboard and the success stories we share freely on our platform.

The leaderboard and success stories serve two purposes.

1. To celebrate the agents and team members who faced their demons and took a step forward regardless of what happened or didn’t happen yesterday.

2. To inspire others by showing that it can be done.  If they can do it, why can’t I?

    • Never compare yourselves to others; it’s not about them.

    • Take what they’re DOING to push yourself forward.

    • Take a step for yourself, and your family.

Success is for the taking!

Here’s to those who TOOK it in September.
